We are honored to offer literature by Bill Britton.
Bro Britton was active in ministry, traveling and writing the revelations that burned on his heart from the 1950s to the 1980s. He eagerly desired to share what he saw in the Word and had no desire for gain – he just wanted to reach those who sought a deeper understanding of the Truth he saw in the scripture.
The messages published by Bro Britton and Bro Warnock are as relevant for today as they were many years ago. I hear it often, “they were ahead of their time.”
May we all walk in our calling and experience the Kingdom of God expressed on, and in, this earth!
Charles William (Bill) Britton – 1918-1985
He was a man who:
- Was consumed with the purposes of God
- Was impassioned to lead a people “through the veil”
- Considered the sufferings of the age not comparable to the glory to come
- Carried the message of the Gospel of the Kingdom of God throughout the world – even to the day of his death
- Lived ahead of his time
Bill Britton was born May 23, 1918 near Willow Springs Missouri, as Charles William Royal Britain, to George and Nora Britain. His parents were divorced when Bill was three years old. Following the divorce, Nora changed the spelling of their last name to Britton and moved to Springfield Missouri.
As a single mother, Nora devoted her life to raising her son by any means necessary. Though she was not a church going woman, she wanted her son to go to church and would send him off every Sunday morning to the neighborhood Baptist Church. Her fierce possessiveness and pessimistic insecurity brought about an adverse reaction in young Billy.
He grew up fiercely independent of her and everyone else in the world, with an optimistic security about his own ability to be able to meet any challenge, and to make his way through any situation. Then, when he was eighteen years old, he found the Lord to be real and his personal Savior. Things began to change quickly. He had already felt a call to preach as he had become very involved in a local Assembly of God church. Then, when Pearl Harbor was attacked, he joined the Marines as a Paratrooper, made twelve jumps in the South Pacific and served as Military Police in Honolulu. He never entertained the thought that he would fail to survive.
After the war, he would marry Mary Nadine Roberts from St Louis Missouri, attend Central Bible College back in Springfield and become an ordained minister with the Assemblies of God. In order to support his family while pastoring small congregations he worked various jobs, sometimes two or three at a time. He dug ditches, ran a concrete mixer, sold life insurance, hospital insurance and Gospel records. He was a radio announcer, sold radio advertising and had his own Gospel music radio show called, “The Old Ship of Zion”. But all of these jobs were just sidelines to put food on the table. His driving passion was to preach the Gospel and build up the Body of Christ.
And, these days were just the beginning. He encountered many adventures while preaching, traveling and raising a family. Moving from Missouri to North Florida to Tennessee to SE Missouri to Kansas to Oklahoma to Louisiana and then back to Springfield Missouri in 1962. Whenever the invitation came to preach, Bro Bill would go and pour out the revelation that was burning on his heart. His gift as a teacher and a story teller laid out the truths he saw in a way that we all could understand and embrace. He often shared his life experiences as illustrations in his messages. After some years, those close to him insisted he write a biography which he finally did and called it Prophet on Wheels; publishing one chapter at a time. He was writing the chapters of this book and was not yet finished when he preached his last sermon in July 1985. *thoughts from daughter Becky and quotes from biography “Prophet on Wheels”
Unlike many evangelists of his era, Bro Bill’s greatest legacy came not from crusades or stadiums but from the printed page.
In the 1960s and 70s, his newsletters, books, and tracts circulated widely among Pentecostal and Charismatic believers. He wrote in plain, passionate language that carried prophetic weight. Titles like:
Come Out of Her, My People – a call to leave lifeless religion and seek authentic Spirit-led faith.
Run Before the Chariots – stirring believers to bold obedience.
The Harness of the Lord – his most famous allegory, teaching on God’s discipline.
Through these writings, Bro Bill became a voice of renewal far beyond his own meetings. Believers who never saw him preach still felt the fire of his convictions.
Like the Latter Rain itself, Bro Bill’s teachings stirred both devotion and suspicion. His emphasis on spiritual maturity and sonship drew critics who feared it would encourage elitism or exaggerated expectations of spiritual power.
Yet many believers testify that his writings lifted them out of complacency. His vision of a victorious church gave hope that Christianity could be more than waiting for heaven—it could be about walking in Christ’s fullness today.
The Harness of the Lord continues to circulate as a classic of revival literature. His themes of sonship and spiritual discipline remain alive in Apostolic-Prophetic networks, Kingdom theology circles, and among believers who long for something deeper than surface-level religion.
Looking back, Bro Bill’s ministry offers a few timely reminders:
Revival is more than meetings. It is about transformed lives, disciplined by God for greater purposes.
The Spirit calls us to maturity. Christianity is not just about beginnings but about growing into Christlikeness.
In an age of celebrity ministries and short-lived fads, Bro Bill’s quiet legacy is striking. He didn’t need stadiums to shape a movement—just a pen, a pulpit, and a burning message.
